So many readers love romance, and there are so many different kinds of romance novels. Today’s featured author writes fresh contemporary romance, including The Keller Family Series, which has been a bestseller on iBookstore and Amazon, reaching number one. Bernadette Marie is a mother of five, has written twenty-five books and runs a publishing company – wow! We are honoured she managed to find the time to visit Booktastik, because, well, she is obviously crazy busy.
Hi Bernadette Marie. It’s so great to meet you. We’d love to know what started you on your writing journey?
I, like many authors, have been penning stories since I was a child. I began writing when I was 13 and submitted my first book at 16. Writing was the natural thing for me to do. It not only let me escape for a bit, but my mind was always in story mode. The most natural thing for me was to write them down.
Are your romances ‘sweet’ or do they cross to the naughty side?
Though I have a few books with some hotter passion, I’d say they stay on the sweet side. I truly believe the reader can take the scene to their own level if I let them, so I leave it to them to decide.
Are you a plotter or pantser?
I am a pantser all the way. If I try to plot, it just becomes disastrous.
Is there much research involved before or while writing your books?
I do research items in my book, but there isn’t much research usually. I write in modern day, which makes it much easier for me, of course.
You are such a prolific author, what made you want to publish for other authors and start your publishing company, 5 Prince Publishing?
I’ll be honest, when I opened 5 Prince Publishing I had no thoughts of publishing other authors. It was designed to put my books out there on my own. However, opportunity simply presented itself a few times and authors seemed to like my business model. I suppose it was just meant to be. We’ve been very blessed at 5 Prince Publishing to have published some very talented authors. Their work is outstanding.
Do you have any advice for new authors that will help prepare them for a writer’s life?
I always have advice. First, never stop writing. Even if one book isn’t getting picked up, keep writing the next. (Even if it’s picked up…always be writing the next.) Second, remember that reviews are for the buyer, not the author. Don’t burden yourself with what other people think. Keep writing for yourself.
Of course, my advice for new authors always is puke it out…puke out your story. It’s a horrible analogy, but it works. Get the words out of you before you touch the manuscript again. As authors we love perfection, however, we will write the same book for 22 years if we keep going back and trying to fix it before it’s done. (Yes, I speak from experience.)
Who are your favourite authors?
I love Nora Roberts, Karen White, am blessed to be the editor and publisher for Lisa J. Hobman, who is brilliant as well.
Which is your favourite series, out of the ones you have written?
All of them. But the Keller Family will always be very near and dear to my heart. They will always be the format in which I follow for family series, I’m sure. People fell in love with those characters for a reason. They’re a wonderful family.
What does a typical day in your life look like, and how many hours a day do you find to write?
I’m not sure I have a typical day. (Insert evil laugh) But usually it goes something like this. I get up at 4:45am and hit the yoga mat. Then I begin the process of getting my 5 kids to 3 different schools. When I drop off the last one I head to the rec center to work out. When I get into my office I divide my day into my 2 different companies and then my writing time. (To be honest, the writing comes when it’s ready. So my computer is with me always and I can write under any circumstance. That’s a gift!) At 3:30 I pick up kiddos, work in my office a little more, then usually the evening is filled with hockey practice, choir or instrumental music concerts.
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now I’m working on the third book in the Walker Family Series, Walker Bride.
Can you tell us about your latest release?
My latest release was part of an anthology with 5 other amazingly talented authors. Unwrap the Romance has six unique contemporary romance novellas. My title A Romance For Christmas is officially the 11th book in the Keller Family Series. It released on November 5th exclusively at Amazon.
That looks like an awesome anthology coming up to Christmas. Thanks so much for visiting, Bernadette, and good luck with the latest release!Read previous articleRead next article
